Last Baby Born at Former Bell Hospital and First Baby Born at New Facility Receive Bonds

The Bell Hospital Board, Bell Foundation and Bell Auxiliary have announced that $40,000 in education bonds will be split between the last Bell Baby born at the former Bell Hospital and the first Bell Baby born at the new hospital facility.

Dr. Holly Ray, an OB/GYN specialist with Bell Superior Women’s Care, announced the education funding gift to the Bell Baby moms at a brief ceremony at the new Bell Hospital September 29.

The last Bell Baby at the old hospital was born Sept. 24. She is Raina Koryn Ledzian, the daughter of Rita Martin and Richard Ledzian of Iron Mountain. Rita came back to Bell to deliver her third child because Dr. Ray had been her obstetrician during two previous pregnancies, and she wanted not only to remain Dr. Ray’s patient, but to ensure her third child was a Bell Baby.

The first baby born at the new Bell Hospital was delivered at 7:39 p.m. on the 27th. She is Ellise Marie Dove, daughter of Rebecca Roy and Peter Dove on L’Anse.

Bell CEO Rick Ament explained that the two $20,000 bonds will mature over the next 18 years and are funded jointly by Bell Hospital, the Bell Auxiliary and Bell Foundation. The bond money will be earmarked for post-secondary education costs.

“We wanted a truly substantial gift that was appropriate for the last and first Bell Babies,” Mr. Ament said. “We hope Raina and Ellise will grow up knowing that their college education options may be greatly expanded by the caregivers who saw that they came safely into the world. While generous, the bonds are fiscally prudent because the hospital, foundation and auxiliary are each funding one-third of the cost, which totals 50 percent of face value.”
